I am fast approaching peak Siberian bloom on 6/16. In previous
years, the Sibs were just be in bud at this date. Everything is
looking good this year in all classes.
Again, 'Shaker's Prayer' is the tallest. I haven't measured it
but is so tall that when I went to take it to the Maine Iris
Society show on 6/12 in Auburn, ME things happened in transport.
First thing is that it was too darn tall for our car - upright.
So, I decided to HOLD a stalk diagonally in the front seat and
have a second stalk LAYING down in the back of the car. (my
husband's idea) Andrew drove since I asked him to help. I had
two tomato boxes fill of 2-liter bottles full of irises (TBs,
Sibs, MTBs, etc.).
In New England we have curvy, hilly roads. So it didn't take
long to have me in the back seat gripping the boxes of stalks.
Meanwhile, I had turned to look back (still in front seat) and
ripped the top off of the 'Shaker's Prayer' I was holding. No
harm done I thought..I brought a spare. Ha. The spare was soon
gone as well. I prefer not to disclose how that one lost its
top. :-(
*No iris bud fly (Ortchacheta) this year....we had plenty of
rain so that theory is kaput. Maybe the early bloom is the
reason? Too early for them to inflict their damage? They are not
to be found in any other irises so far this year.

p.s. Laurie, your irises are blooming well here. Your iris
setosa is just about finished and it was loaded with
bloomstalks. Your unknown blue Sib. should be out today and I am
hoping to i.d. it. The buds look so much like one of mine. And
your old 'Eric the Red' is in full swing. Thanks.
