Re: Making crosses....

Ellen,
It doesn't take pollen long to do it's thing. Based on my experiences with Japanese irises and reading on pollination in general, I would guess that rain 6 hours later on an otherwise ideal day would have little, if any effect on pollination rate.

There are several references that you might find helpful.
Seed Dormancy and Germination by JW Bradbeer has an easy to read discussion of germination. Unfortunately, it is out of print and hard to come by. You might find it in a university library.
The Natural History of Pollination by Proctor, Yeo and Lack (Timber Press) includes more than most of us would ever think to ask about pollination. I just started reading it this week. If it weren't for a garden filled with bloom, I would be glued to it.

Dennis Hager
on Delmarva, where 3" of rain last evening didn't stop me from smearing pollen

'Neat Trick' also opened today and, of course, I had to cross
them using E.A. as the pod parent. Nice and dry when I made the
crosses but showers expected early evening. So, it might have
  been in vain. :-(
