{Disarmed} 2006 bloom

I haven't written for a long time but am inspired this year by the bloom on the Siberians in New York.

We have had a cold spring, came close to a frost two nights in June and have had rain in the forecast or on the garden nearly daily.  There has been less sun on the garden and more cloudy or grey weather than in many years remembrance.  We follow the practice of using any ordinary 5-10-5 in March on the whole farm.

With all of this, the bloom on the Siberians is the best in fifteen years.  There are many flowers on clumps which have been spare of flowers in the past.  Last summer was also rainy.  The plants with fewest bloomstalks are those in the least amount of open or sunny areas.   Do look into some of the older, smaller flowered cv's.  They have hundreds of bloomstalks and make a statement in the garden.

Half of the Siberians were dug up and divided in the fall of 2004.  I would conclude that two or more years is needed in our zone to return Siberians to full flower and that huge amounts of water are the single most beneficial garden situation conducive to flowering well.

Orville Fay is still my favorite Siberian.
