I'm glad to have started a discussion of the design division. (Arnold, I
think I'll move to Iowa if you have that much interest in design.)
Regarding judges/judging: when I have contacted National Council of State
Garden Clubs judges for our design classes, I've always stressed to them
that we are gardeners, who are trying our hand at arranging. I've said that
"this is not a Standard Flower Show" and "please be supportive and
instructive in your comments". We've never had a problem with harsh
comments. I've clerked several times and was impressed with the care the
judges took in writing their comments. They always found something positive
to say, and then, perhaps, some guidance, gently phrased. On several
occasions, I've asked the judges if they would be willing to meet with the
arrangers after the judging was completed, to give them suggestions on "what
could make it better". I'm not a judge (neither AIS, nor NCSGC) so I have
no backside to protect, but I've always found our Massachusetts judges to be
supportive and sensitive. And, as an exhibitor, I want feedback in order
improve my arrangements.
