Hello everyone!
At our late show this weekend I displayed my single stalk of Esther CDM
next to two entries of Gull's Wing. We did a close comparison of the
flowers and while some found subtle differences in flower form (I think
they are hard to attribute when comparing few flowers) we did find one
distinguishing characteristic. Gull's Wing had long ovaries, (that area
between the bracts and base of the petals) compared to Esther CDM.
The late show was held in Mora, about 70 Miles north of the Twin Cities. It
was an apogon show with Siberians, Spurias, Louisianas and Japanese. The
Best of Show was a Spuria, Archie Owen, a magnificent bloom. The Spurias
really stole the show.
We had twice the artistic entries of our Mid-Season show, this I attribute
to the participation of the local garden club as co-sponsors. This may be a
way to really expand our state iris organization. The state club educates,
provides show materials, awards, and judges. The local club runs publicity,
the facility, and provides most of the entries.
