Please give me more information about gel-packs. What are they and what do
they cost? Thanks.

Harold,
Thought I'd post this to the group since there may be a few others who'd
like to try this.
I make my own gel packs. The gel is copolymer gel crystals... these are the
water holding crystals you can find at most nursery or hardware stores now.
Start by hydrating the gel crystals. 1 teaspoon to 1 1/2 to 2 cups water.I
use a paper napkin or strong paper towel to hold the gel on the roots.
Lay the plant's roots on the paper and cover with just enough of the gel to
cover the roots. If you've got a large amount of roots, just use more and
work some of the gel in between to get it in contact with as much of the
roots as possible. Remember that this stuff is relatively heavy so will add
to the costs of shipping.
Wrap the ends of the paper napkin or towel firmly around the gel packed
roots and carefully pour on just a bit more water to the outside of the
napkin to wet it. You want the paper damp but not soggy.
Stuff gelled, wrapped roots into a small plastic bag and close the top
firmly at the crown of the iris with a wide rubber band. Add another rubber
band somewhere near the bottom of the bag to hold things in place. I
usually slip a plastic marker under the bands on the outside of the plastic
bag.
That's pretty much it. It sounds involved until you've done 2 or 3 of
these, then it's as easy as putting together a sandwich.
