Re: replying to messages - plus Bio

Hi there,
Sorry, I didn't mean to send that message to the whole list, but I
guess I forgot to change the e-mail address. (My excuse is that I just
finished working 12 hours overnight and dozed off for a second there).
Anyway, since I am writing this note, I may as well introduce myself to the
list.
My name is Gary White, and my wife Linda and I live in Lincoln,
Nebraska - zone 4 in our front yard and zone 5 in the backyard (or so it
seems - its a pretty amazing difference actually). We have grown siberians
(named varieties) for about 15 years, but my mother had a couple of unnamed
ones that I remember from early childhood. Our first siberian was Caesar's
Brother (isn't that the first one most people get?) and it has spiralled ever
upward from there. We are growing over 100 varieties now, as well as about
40 Japanese Irises and lots of other irises, daylilies, clematis, peonies,
etc. on our 2+ acres. We have been in Nebraska for about 8 years now,
having moved here from West Virginia. I can tell you that it is much more
challenging growing beardless irises in Nebraska than it was in northern WV
(especially during the learning curve in that first couple of years of
Nebraska weather). The summers here can be unmercifully hot and dry, so
soaker hoses have become my constant companions during these times. And the
winters can also be very dry and bitterly cold. Luckily this winter has been
kind to us. We had snow cover continuously from early December until about a
week ago, so the siberians should be in good shape coming into spring. I'm
hoping this year will continue to be one of those wetter years and the soaker
hoses won't have to be used so much.
I do want to say that it was very nice meeting so many of you at the
Siberillenium in Iowa City last June. Linda and I have been to 3 other
mini-conventions (2 Japanese and 1 Spuria) and they all have been wonderful.
Its much easier to get acquainted with people when the crowd is much smaller
as was the Siberillenium than at the AIS conventions. And to Anna Mae
Miller, who last June was encouraging me to start hybridizing siberians, I
have decided to try a few crosses this spring, so wish me luck. But mostly,
I'm just happy that I can grow the really great irises being introduced by
Marty and Jan, Bob Hollingworth, Dana Borglum, John Coble and Bob Bauer, John
White, Dr. McEwen and others. The advances in siberian irises over the past
15 years have been amazing. And, I would have a difficult time parting
with all the old favorites too, so I guess I'm going to have to go out and
make a few more beds to accomodate even more siberians. Hope to see some of
you at the AIS convention in York, PA this May.

Gary White,
Lincoln, Nebraska (let's just call it zone 4.5)
