I have a small specialty nursery and voles and field mice have caused me
many problems. I now do virtually all of my propagation on top of a 3-4"
layer of gravel. The rodents don't burrow up through this and the technique
has saved me from a lot of headaches. I set pots, containers, and flats on
the gravel. It also keeps down weeds and makes it possible to work in
rainy weather. Obviously, this isn't the solution for field propagation!
>From time to time, rodents will run across the top of the gravel and get in
to a bed of pots, but I raise tens of thousands of plants each year with few
problems.

Thank you everyone who has written about voles. There has been some
really helpful information. I've passed it all on to my friend, and
taken note of it myself.
