Transplanting seedlings

Sandy,
I work more with Japanese irises, but I use a combination of factors to
determine when to transplant. The plant should be large enough not to
get lost in the garden. Most importantly, it should have a healthy
rootball. If garden conditions are not conducive to quick growth, move
the seedling up to a larger pot and pamper it a little longer. With
crosses that produce less than 10 seedlings, I generally move them up to
4" pots with tight rootballs before I line them out. It is rare that I
lose one. With extremely fertile crosses, I will line them out from 1"
plugs.

Generally, I have found that growing them in pots until bloom season is
over works best for me. JI seedlings that are started in January or
February then lined out in early July will reliably bloom (usually one
stalk) the following year. The few Siberians that I have treated this
way had 3-4 bloomstalks the following year!
