Re: Digest Number 1615

Be aware that Neat Trick is not a pattern of white dashes or flecks on a blue background. It looks like it, but on close examination you will see that it is a series of flecks of cell packages that have no pigment.  Flecks of necrotic tissue... empty cells.  The two cell walls (top and bottom) reflect light and appear white. Also the tips of the falls are always indented because of a group of necrotic tissue.  I remember looking all over a clump of 50+ blossoms to cut a good bloom to take to a show, I found none.  I then found the dead cell flecks a fault. Decided then not to even offer it for sale any more. It was not a good grower for us and that helped the decision to pull it.   Would be NEAT if someone could put some pigment into those cells !

Chuck,
I think I recall hearing that John White had produced another iris with the same pattern, this one a wine red. Maybe Sharon Whitney might know about this?
I'll go back and look at my records, and see what I might still have. I've lost a lot over the last four years due to a protracted move and resulting neglect.

Thanks Ken.
A sib cross or back cross would be needed to see if anything crops up
as recessive. If you still have any seed I'd be interested in trying to
recover 'Neat Trick" pattern as a recessive.

Chuck,
I did the cross Neat Trick x Kita No Seiza. Fertility seemed normal,
but none of the progeny looked like Neat Trick and none had six falls
like Kita No Seiza. That seems pretty normal to me for this type of
cross. I can't say offhand whether I ever sib crossed the progeny, but
I'm pretty sure I still have descendants of this line, maybe only as
seeds.

Does anyone have experience trying Neat Trick as a parent?

Re Neat Trick, I vaguely remember hearing some years ago that someone (Andy Wheeler??) had crosse it with a yellow and came up with a flower with yellow dashes on a blue ground. Sounds interesting if that memory is correct. Bob.

Hello and especially those who have a crazy winter which is most of us. We now live in Upper Cape Cod and we are still digging out of the piles of snow in our little village.
But the annual St. Patrick' s Day parade will be held on Sunday in Boston matter what....
And the spring copy of The Siberian Iris will also be making its appearance thanks to Bob Hollingworth.
The prices will remain the same.....what a bargain.
The line listing will still be $10.00 and  full page color (4" x 7" = 60.00 , 1/2 page color (4" x 3 1/2 ") = $30.00,
Full page B & W (4" x 7" = $50.00, half page (B x W) (4" x 3 1/2") =$30.00, 1/4 page (B and W ) (4" x 1 1/2") = 20. 00.
Please make out checks to The Society for Siberian Iris and send to:
