Being an ex-computer geek (so this isn't a plug for anyone in particular)
at a large patent/trademark law firm in Minneapolis, I can tell you the
process of patenting is complicated and time-consuming, as well as
not-too-terribly cheap. However, it is worthwhile, especially if
considering any sort of commercial venture.

Once again, this is not a plug, but simply providing information. When I
was working there, and after a brief glance today, a lot of information can
be found regarding the patent process.
