We don't exhibit at Chelsea these days. It is a costly and time-consuming
exercise and the rewards are meagre, as visitors can not buy plants there but
must place orders. Additionally, most visitors only go there for the
spectacle, and not to purchase.
Instead, we go to plant fairs, of which there are many thriving examples. We
have one tomorrow in fact, at the Savill Garden at Windsor. Much less hassle
- all we do is turn up with a lorryload of plants (I get to drive the lorry!)
and sell as much as we can - no expensive and time consuming exhibits to
build, and the visitors go away with the plants in their hands!
The Royal Horticultural Society have had problems attracting exhibitors to
Chelsea for the reasons already stated - so much so that they are now
actually *paying* nurseries to take space at the show! It is my belief that
the Chelsea show is unlikely to exist in its current format in ten or twenty
years time unless a larger site can be found that allows exhibitors space to
sell their wares on the day.
