Re: what's wrong in my sib-JI bed?

Hello Claire - I generally agree with most of what you wrote to Diana with these
exception noted here:
>>>>> You probably do not need to amend the soil for JI's. Unles you are in a
notoriously high alkaline soil area, the JI's will be OK in average soil no matter how
much is written on the subject.

I do agree with most of even these _but_ my soil in this new place (3.5 yrs.) has got me
pulling my frizzy hair out (maybe not such a bad idea ;-). It is loaded with calcium and
has a very high magnesium content as well as a high phosphorus level. To wit, it was
tested to have 2280 ppm (Ca) which was cited as Very High, etc. The others are almost as
bad. The pH here is 6.4 which can be managed.

My old property (which I planted Japanese irises was tested by the state univ. through
the county extension service to be 448 ppm for Ca which was low. JIs grew and flourished
there. The ph there was also 5.7 which I know now is not the be all end all for JIs.

To make this short, I had two JIs bloom last year (short) and many died....I have almost
given up but I am starting again this year to figure out some way to work within the
confines of bad soil.

The upswing is that everything else is going like gangbusters here. The silver lining.

Ellen (MDBs in bloom here along with tulips and daffs that won't give up)
