I am wondering if the problem is as much pH as drainage. Unless you are dealing with really high pH, it seems to me that determination of success with sibs is a deep,humusy soil that does not allow water to stand.
In one area where subsoil was brought up when laying a water line where I wanted sibs, I dug out the clay, threw in some gravel and topped with 14"of compost and they love it.
