HYB-- Garden visit

From: "John Bruce" <jbruce@infinet.com>

Hi all-

I had a free day and took a drive to Steve Varner's place (Illini Iris)
yesterday. Steve was kind enough to spend a couple of hours with me
and donate some seedling pollen.

There were some interesting plants in the seedling rows, and I did manage
to leave with more than a few bottles of anthers. Only true iris lovers
would stand in a field of thigh-high grass with tweezers and bottles, trying to label
pollen, make notes in a book and manage a camera while calling it fun. <G>

Two seedlings of particular interest were one dark blue siberian with white
color-break splashes in the falls, and another dark purple bitone with
a medium sized navy blaze in the falls. Both were well branched and had nice
clumps of upright foliage. I spent the morning at home applying
pollen to my own siberians. I can only hope that some of my new seedlings
from last years' crosses will be half as interesting when they bloom.
