Hi Ellen and sibrob list members,
I would like to comment on the attachments/images/photos emails that
have been posted to this list.
Another alternative for viewing images would be to upload them to
the "Files" area of the sibrob@egroups.com site.
Rather than sending individual messages with attachments, a member
can log in to egroups.com, go to their "my groups" section (for this
list it is sibrob of course) and then go to the files area. I
recently put some of my siberian iris photos in a folder
called "Shauna's Siberian Iris Pix". These are pix from last year,
but it's a start. ;)
When viewing images through the files area, members who do not wish
to receive attachments would never have to worry about getting them
in their email box. The chief complaint about receiving attachments
is the download time some people with slower modems face.
A feature in the "Files" area is that you can send an automatic text
message to the sibrob list when you upload a file to this area,
letting the whole list know that you have put some images there. I
chose not to do this with mine, since they are old photos which I had
already posted to the iris-photos list, but a person can still go
view them at any time, along with any of the other photos that have
been uploaded there.
A person should still limit their file size when scanning or saving
their digital camera files as a jpeg. Acceptable viewing/size on most
lists is generally less than 100k, and no more that 72 dpi in
resolution is necessary for list viewing purposes. The cap on files
sizes for the egroups list is basically because there is a limited
amount of space available to the list, which is currently set at
20480 kb. The files we have currently posted to the files area only
total up to 200kb currently, though, so we still have lots of room.
Another item of note, other egroups lists usually have a mandate of
making folders within the Files area for the purpose of storing their
files, to keep them orderly. Right now, the only other person who has
uploaded files to the "Files" area is Harold, so there was really no
need for a folder system to this point. If more people start using
the files area, however, you as moderator, Ellen, or the person who
uploads the files to the sibrob list can make a folder to put his or
her photo files in.
Viewing the photos from the files area is still not available to
those who choose to read in digest mode, or receive their emails to
their home email address ONLY. A person DOES have to log on to the
egroups.com site to do this. Apparently though, this sibrob list has
PUBLIC archives, which means that anyone, not just list members, has
total access to our archives and can view them at any time without
becoming a member of our list. Because of this, if there are photos
which you do not want the rest of the world to view, you should not
post them to this list or to any public archive on the internet.
There are copyright laws which do protect your photos, as photos may
not be used by anyone else legally WITHOUT your written consent, but
people still do seem to "borrow" them without your permission. I have
recently read a couple of books on Copyright law (yeah, I don't get
out much) so if anyone would like further info on the topic, please
email me directly as I would love to fill you in on it.
In closing, this "Files" option might have already been discussed
earlier on the sibrob list, but just thought that I would let you
know that using the Files section does work very well. You can find
the hyperlink to the FILES area located on the left hand side
below "members" once you log on to sibrob@egroups.com.
The url to this list is: http://www.egroups.com/group/sibrob
This link should take your directly to our sibrob group here. You
will still have to log in to egroups to view the archived sibrob text
and attachments, or to view the photos posted to the Files area.
Hope this helps a bit.

Sibrob messages will probably not be able to view the pic. If you
will go to the message section of our site on egroups, the pic can be
viewed there.
