An effective contact killer of aphids is insecticidal soap. The registered
insecticide is a potassium salt of a fatty acid (soap). Should have
virtually no toxicity to anything but aphids and similar insects. "Safer" is
a national brand name for this product. They are rather expensive on a
larger scale but maybe tolerable for seedlings. I purchased 2 gallons of
concentrated insecticidal soap when the aphids started getting out of
control last spring. However the weather changed and eliminated the aphid
problem before I had to spray.
I have seen "home" recipes involving dishwashing detergent with a variety of
additives. I doubt the effectiveness of these and the experts I was
listening to on the gardening show were not kind to the home recipes as it
is the wrong type of soap.
