Harold, we generally need to use a hatchet on some clump or other every
year. We try to dig, divide and line out everything every other year because
by year 3 you may need a tractor with a front-end loader. Some plants,
particularly CAESAR'S BROTHER, get so large and hard to handle that we now
dig and divide it every year.

I divided a 4 year old clump of Roaring Jelly this af ternoon. I am sure
glad there was no one around to watch the process. After 30 minutes with the
garden hose washing out rocks and dirt, I had this seamless mass of roots
and rhizomes all the way around the clump. More washing yeilded a larger
rock and a handhold into the roots. It took about an hour but I finally
completed a manual tearing apart of the clump. I have two stacks of cinder
blocks that support a refrigerator shelf at my water cleaning work station.
I removed the shelf and used the edge of the cinder blocks to concentrate
the force to break the large clumps down once I had an opening into the
clump.
This clump was only medium size compared to the clump of Caesar's Brother
and Tropic Nights. I think I will start with the axe or hatchet if I ever
decide to divide those. I wondered how a regular commercial garden grew
Siberians for sale. Based on comments in the minimal acceptable size of
divisions, I can now understand the advantage of "lining out".
Thanks to all of you who responded to the question about minimal
acceptable size. I learned a lot in that series of responses.
