Hello everyone. I thought I would send a few words of introduction.
I joined sibrob about two weeks ago, and have spent some time
ploughing through the archives to "get grounded".
For a half-dozen years I have been planting a fairly wide variety of
perennials and evaluating them against my criteria:
-plants should look attractive throughout the gardening year
-be cold hardy in my area
-be weed suppressing, or can be mulched to suppress weeds
-and must increase over time
Early on in this endeavour I traded some plants with a friend and
ended up with a siberian iris (with very small species-type flowers).
This was my first awareness of siberians, though I was familiar with
the various bearded classes.
I soon realized that this siberian iris met my criteria far better
than the bearded irises I had been growing and ordered 6 older
varieties from a mail order catalogue. I have been adding to my
collection exponentially and, if everything planted this year
survives, I will be up to 37 varieties. My acquisitions have
included a number of recent award winners, popularity poll
favourites, rebloomers, and shorter varieties. I keep notes on my
siberians, including bloom dates and spring fan counts.
In the future I would like to acquire more of the shorter (6"-24")
introductions to experiment with a wider variety of planting
schemes. In this height range I already have: RUFFLED VELVET,
JEWELLED CROWN, ANNICK, SWEET SUCCESS & ILLINI CHARM. Other short
ones that I am aware of are: SASSY KOOMA, SNOW QUEEN, WEISER ZWERG,
BABY SISTER, LORENA CRONIN and PRECIOUS DOLL. Any comments on these
(or other short varieties) would be appreciated, particularly with
respect to vigor.
Anyway, I'm happy to be aboard!
