Bill Dougherty,
Regarding Precious Doll, Calvin has a good point – if you see
it blooming you are apt to want it in your garden. Although I
don't have a photo of mine, it flowers a very pretty multi-hued
pastel. Registered as: S. deep lavender; F. lilac with cream
white signals and chartreuse green hafts, icy style arms with
aqua midribs. I recall mine having a touch of yellow in the
bloom as well. Attractive and well named. It is somewhat balky
about blooming and increasing as you see by all those who have
lost it. Years ago Shirley Pope saw it blooming here and was
surprised, saying it often doesn't bloom. I've been lucky as it
usually does flower for me, but didn't this season. Currier
gave me the plant I have and,of course, Steve Varner gave him
the original piece.
The plant here, (North Windham near Portland, Maine) is somewhat
stressed due to our hot summer with very little rain, but there
is enough to send you a piece in the spirit of generosity. I'll
mail it out to you this coming week. Hopefully you can keep it
alive through the winter. We wish you the best of good fortune
in seeing it bloom.
