Re: Re: Precious Doll

Anna Mae, I would not fill the hole with leaves. That might just make a sink hole that moisture will drain into, causing rot. Is there any other garden there where you can put the peonies. Maybe even leave them in their pots for the winter so that you can plant after the moisture from the broken watering system drains away. I had to do this with a peony in our zone 2b area and it survived the winter, buried in the ground, still in the pot. Is there anywhere todig a trench and just bury the pots for the winter?

Karl, I went out to transplant a tree peony and P. America which were put in
too shady a place about 3 yrs. ago. The irrigation has had some broken areas
and they finally got them repaired and I have about 1 doz. plants to get in the
soil. We have been dry for 2 mos. but evidently it rained a fair amount
(after being bone dry some of the time the irrigation was off and I hope my newly
planted Siberians and JIs are going to survive). The soil was oversaturated
when I dug the holes to plant in and went whoosh and while I was digging the
plants 4" of water came up in the hole so I decided to pot the 2 plants and wait
for it to dry out. I complained and manager discovered that the hose was not
turned all the way off and a connection between 2 hoses had drenched the area.
Do you think it would help if I filled the hole in the bottom with leaves like
was suggested Ginny is suggesting? I have poor drainage and hard pan with a
bit of top soil and I have been adding several bags of composted cowconure for 8
years now and not much improvement. anna mae
