Maybe I can help regarding Jewelled Crown and fertility. JC is fertile both
ways (e.g. as a pod parent in Coronation Anthem and as a pollen parent in
Strawberry Fair), but like a lot of tetraploids it takes some patience and the
right conditions to get pods to set. I think that's why bee pods aren't
common. Mike Lowe was too kind to JC in his list of registered offspring since
several of these involve a couple of siblings of JC that were never introduced
rather than JC itself. More and more I'm coming to the conclusion that
tetraploid crosses set pods well only under cool conditions (highs in the 60's
and 70's) -- true of all Siberian crosses but more strongly with tets. Even
so, more crosses will fail than will give good seedpods. Just keep trying.
This year, which was a really hot one during bloom season, I made most tet
crosses late at night and it seemed to help. Maybe tetraploids prefer to do it
in the dark. Hope this helps. Bob Hollingworth
