SR - Test gardens

From: Bill Dougherty <103225.2126@compuserve.com>

Hello everyone!

I have grown Jewelled Crown for many years and always found it to be a
reluctant mother.

Last night I watched a couple of tapes about the RHS garden at Wisley,
England. A number of acres are devoted to test gardens, a subject dear to
my heart.
Here is an idea I want to throw out and maybe also write in an article for
"The Siberian Iris". How about a Siberian test garden? Sponsored by SSI and
a AIS Region or club at an arboretum? A location where new introductions
can be trialed for say three to five years? Performance is graded and a
special award is given. This would be a garden award. If the garden was
well run it should do a great deal to promote siberians! I do not think it
would detract from conventions as they are special events and are held
around the continent. Roses have their ARS trial gardens why not Iris! The
Dr. Loomis trial garden is sponsored by a club. Why couldn't the Siberian
section promote
trial gardens for Iris.
