Re: Bloom Stalks

Two years ago I used brushes ( I buy the cheap ones that come in a pack of 12 for $1.00, bought at discount stores) They seemed to work fine. Last year I cut them off to about ½". This made it easier to control for me. The only problem was I was not getting takes. My friend was making crosses in my iris at the same time and getting takes. He was using the anthers.

I think the stiff ends of the cut off brushes were in some way injuring the stigmatic lip. I switched to anthers and started getting takes. I was transferring plenty of pollen with the brushes.

I have about 3 dozen brushes. I use a new brush for each cross and clean all afterward.

Donald,

I have heard people say they use a brush for putting on pollen but I guess I am slow.  I can?t get a mental picture of this.  What kind of brush?  Soft bristled or hard, long bristled or short?  Do you scrub it against the anther?  How do you hold the anther?  Do you just brush it against the stigmatic lip afterwards?  I hate seeming stupid but I just haven?t been able to get my mind around this.  Maybe I should just pop over there and watch <VBG>
