Will, if your unknown is still in bloom, take your tweezers and take out a stamen, and one from a known tetraploid and compare them side by side.  Diploids typically have distinctly smaller stamens than tetraploids.
 
The size of the pollen grains is definately different and may even be apparent to the naked eye.  A 20-power hand lens will show the difference with no possible doubt.
