RE: [SpaceAgeRobin] T'bird sdlg

Your growing conditions have been somewhat like mine this year.  On even the best of the regular irises the stalks have been short and the bud count low.  Even though the clumps look healthy about a third of them don’t have any bloom stalks at all and probably won’t.  Temperatures have been over 90 degrees F. for over a week now, so there is no more pollen on anything.  I got a few pods, but not what I wanted.

Hello Francelle,

The stalks are straight and wind resistant.  I like the appendages, too.  That little filament-like thing doesn't overburden anything.  Bud count is mostly seven per stalk, but on one stalk I counted five, on another six and on another nine.  But mostly, so far as I could tell, there were usually seven.  I don't know if that means much here or not.  Those advertised as having much higher bud counts usually don't do that here.  7-9 on those advertised is about average for those supposed to have more and average here for most TBs is 5-7.  That's just as well.  The last buds usually dry up or are pitiful, unattractive blooms anyway.  I much prefer a plant that increases sufficiently and is able to bloom multiple stalks with lower bud count in a clump.  They simply look and perform better under my conditions.  This seedling works well in that area.  It also has a nice color and pretty good substance.  I think the form isn't best, but blooming in the garden it works quite well.  I'm most definitely oriented toward garden plants and not show stalks.  Under more agreeable growing conditions I think it's possible this one might have more buds, but maybe not either.
