We have much work to do!

So far, Praetorian Guard has consistently opened each bloom here with a spoon on each of the three falls with each of the spoons topped by a perfectly formed horn atop each of the spoons. These horns are covered with projections that appear to be beard hairs.

I've crossed PG to a crosses that have bloomed from '93 seedlings that are PG x El Cerito. None of these seedlings (2) to date exhibit SA characteristics.

I've crossed PG to Golden Immortal. Golden Immortal has opened one bloom with perfectly formed, smooth horns on the three falls. The other blooms have opened with short, fuzzy horns on each of the three falls.

I've crossed PG with seedlings that are Wild Wings x Polished Manners. I do not know if I have pollen strikes on these.

I've crossed PG with Fashion Designer and do not know if this has taken.

As a point in passing, Wild Wings is a reluctant, and late bloomer here. Likely, it will be difficult to choose specific crosses that can be made with WW here. Pollen will have to go on what is available at the time it blooms or after it does so. The "after it does so" blooms will be few and far between.

Perhaps we should collect Wild Wings pollen and ship northward, to make the crosses we need?

My season is running about 2 weeks behind. Peak here is April 29. I am no more than 25% bloomed. I've pollinated about 250 blooms to date. I have successful crosses with iris albicans x aril breds along with some successful AB x AB crosses.

Which reminds me, I have an AB x Praetorian Guard cross but I cannot immediately recall the AB parent.

Another point in passin', if you do not have Ice Cream Social, get it! Triple sockets on most every treminal, tall, strong, heavy, stately, stalks. The color cannot be described and my camera still has no battery. Grows ever so well. Get it! And yes, I put some PG on one or two of it's blooms. Mostly though, it got pollen from (Lemon Chess x Change Your Ways).

Old South Iris Society members oohed, aahed, clamored, and stumbled over each other to get just a promise of an Ice Cream Social sometime, anytime in the future when we got together last night. All that was from seein' it's worst stalk.

Smiles,
Bill Burleson
