I noted a bloomstalk coming on one of the plants of
WILD WINGS. The other location is too shady and the variety has dwindled
there. I'll reset it this year. My daughter in TN has the only WW
seedlings from here, one of the crosses she took home to raise for me. I
have slides of several from the cross of it with a seedling from (Great Gatsby X
Romantic Evening). If she gets bloom on any of her SA's I'll ask her to
try a pod or two on any of those. The double dose of RE may have given
some non-producers out of that group.
No sign of bloom on most of the SA's I have--a
large proportion of out bloom was lost sometime in the winter or early
spring. We've had no late frosts--have been frost free for several weeks,
and now we're going to shave the edge off 32 degrees tomorrow or Monday
morning....I hope not!
I did note a swelling fan on Christopherson's IN A
HEARTBEAT. I'm not sure if the sib, HEARTBEAT AWAY is going to
bloom. I do have a stalk coming on SOLAR FIRE.
Dr. No, Praetorian Guard and Bye Bye Blues have no
sign of bloom. The location is suspect, and they get moved this year to
what I hope will be a more productive location. I have a lot of work to do
to catch up from three years of neglect. I thought I had these in a
good place. I guess not!
It looks like we can add EL CERRITO to the short
list of non-producers. I'm glad to hear that, as in addition to Wild Wings
I'll have a chance to set pods on it from SA pollen. DEBRENEE is closely
related, so I may try it too. Solar Fire will be later than EC, so I may be
looking for pollen elsewhere.
For the fourth year, no bloom on DYNAMITE. At
least I do have increase, which has not been true in two other locations I've
tried it. The one fan finally got fed enough to take off. Some
varieties are very slow to acclimate here. I have no idea why, but I
simply have to wait out their reluctance.
