Bruce Filardi selected out a few seedlings from his cross of Conjuration X
Romantic Evening, the most attractive of which was a tangerine-bearded
amoena.
In its second bloom he, much to his surprise, noted that it had minimal
horns. The beard definitely lifts from the fall, but only a fairly
short--half inch or perhaps less--horn. It is, however, decidedly SA. He
has shared a photo with me of the seedling, and it has the character and
quality of an RE seedling. I don't doubt the parentage given. So--RE is
*not* a total non-producer, just a rare one.
The results of Filardi, compared to those from Mike Sutton and Michael M.
implies there is something odd about Romantic Evening's breeding behavior.
It will be interesting to cross it with a number of other SA's to see what
sort of progeny occurs.
I would think the same could be done with Wild Wings, as it is a good, full
flower, and may not have the problem of rather narrow falls that Romantic
Evening can deliver. Also, the near-black color of WW makes it an
interesting candidate for a cross parent. I intend to try again next
year--my crosses with it did not take this year. I had no RE bloom, as I
had "shared" it practically to death and am regrowing blooming sized
rhizomes from some old mother's late sprouts. They may get up to bloom size
by next spring....who knows?
Previous crosses from Wild Wings that were not aimed at SA's had a lot of
good, well-formed and adequately wide seedlings included. Romantic Evening,
itself, can and does give exceptionally wide offspring at times. I think it
just depends on the other parent to a high degree.
