This just illustrates what makes trying to pin down
the mechanisms of SA's such a challenge. The variability due to pH alone,
as Bill Burleson illustrated with MESMERIZER growing under a range of pH values,
is only one of several factors that seem to alter SA behavior. Fertility,
temperature, soil to air temperature gradients--who knows? They all may be
factors. To get at the variability due to genetic factors alone all those
other parameters have to be held to a constant, something most of us just aren't
going to be able to do as well as we'd like.
Thanks for posting the photo. That is a
particularly beautiful flower.
