Re: Super Frill

Will, SUPER FRILL was a 1963 registration of Lloyd Austin, which he described as "White and light burgandy-russet plicata, doubled frilled flounces.  Spooned sdlg. 8190 X flounced sdlg. 8209."  It was introduced through his catalog in 1964.  The data appears in the *Check List 1969.*

Austin set the pace and formed the language for the Space Age irises.  His description of this particular appendage as a "doubled frilled flounce" has priority over anything we might come up with and certainly will do as a descriptive designation.

The photo is found in the "Historics" section of the Superstition photos if anyone is interested in seeing this remarkable flower.  I agree, Will, the photo looks a little "burned," as if the contrast is a little too high.  Clear, west coast air and hot sun tends to do this with photographs.  A slight overcast softening the light is often more complementary to iris colors.  Austin's description of the color as "burgandy-russet" plicata on white ground certainly does describe its color, does it not.
