Re: Louvois

Chris,  the pedigree of LOUVOIS is cited in the 1949 *Check List* as "additional information" and is (Fetiche x Roi Soleil) X (Iceberg x Evolution).

A photo of Evolution is included in the "Quick Fix" list on the HIPS site, and comes from Ochracea Caerulea x Marsh Marigold.

Ochracea Caerulea looks like a typical dipoid, but Evolution is almost for certain tetraploid, judging by its appearance.

The only way to be certain of LOUIVOIS' ploidy status is to try its pollen on another tetraploid and vice versa.  If you get a pod with more than one or two seeds, you probably have a tetraploid.

I have my copy of *Garden Irises* loaned out right now, but there is a long list of cultivars that have been counted.  I hope Louivois is in that list.  If anyone has a copy, perhaps it would be helpful to check that part of the Appendix.

TWOI has a mention of Louvois on p. 82 that implies it is a tetraploid.
