[SpaceAgeRobin] A suggestion

Dear SAGE team:

Bill Burleson has made a suggestion that caught my imagination.  I think it is a great idea--even though it is still a while until this could be implemented.

Bill suggests that we select one of the SA seedlings out of our first work, distribute it and all of us use it for another step forward--along with the developing plan of crosses to sort out the genetics.

Each of us that comes up with an SA that we would like to share around with the other team members would post a photo--or a set of photos--showing blossom with the SA trait(s) clearly visible, a full bloomstalk, and a small but active clump.  Hopefully this would display the realities--both commendable and lamentable--of our baby being offered.

Those that have already been making SA crosses for some time could begin this process any time.  Those of us just starting may have a bit of delay getting a seedling up to where there would be enough increase to share rhizomes around.

Then, after we see some photos, we select by e-mail our choice to one person designated to do the counts.  The counting person then would report the consensus choice back to the group, and we could arrange shipping, distribution, and such.

Even those in Canada, Australia and France could participate, as the phytosanitary certificate required would only have to be paid once to import into the US, but export from the US is a little more complex....we'll deal with that when and if the time comes.

This is certainly one more way in which we could get a single, in-common, cross with the same parents--by crossing this seedling with something we all have...and I'm sure as we do trades around, or weed through the massive number of things offered on the market and find some that all of us think are superior for our purposes, that we *will* all have at least one, and perhaps several, varieties in common.

An example--I doubt there is a single one of us that does not already have and have growing YAQUINA BLUE.  DEVONSHIRE CREAM is another that thrives, and at least many of us seem already to have if I'm not mistaken.  There are undoubtedly others.

To summarize short and simple--we select one of our seedlings for all of us to work with, and make the same cross or crosses with it.

I think this sounds like fun!  What d'yall think of this idea?
