Considering its effect on women this iris would have been better named
VALENTINE LACE. Its been a couple of years since Mike Sutton described
its excellent quality as a progenitor. Hopefully on this hottest day of
the year he can refresh us and maybe bring us up to date. Also maybe
correct if I say anything that isn't true.
BL itself is one of the best examples of modern form in a SA. It also
photographs better than any other of the "bests" i have seen.
The pleats of the shoulders of the falls are mirrored on the standards.
The moderate ruffling is in balence with the lacing so its has a
ruffled and laced look without the "savoy cabbage" look that overpowers
the flounce. The "spooned flounce"? has an evenly serrated rim to match
the falls and standards. Though not as dynamic as Patrick Orrs photo of
the spoon lifting two-thirds of the way down the fall the fact that the
lacing on the flounce begins at the same point as the lacing on the
falls and standards shows that flounce/spoons are part of the fall ansd
not a beard extension like a horn or hook. There are few SA who have
modern form and are consistent with horns and no flounces or flounced
without an occasional horn.
I hope Mike has enough stock next year for a limited quantity sale
because being able to exclude the horn variable or the flounce variable
will make the statistics more credible
Michael Michaeli, also inside in this hottest day of the year in
Stockton Ca.
