Hi Will,
Thanks very much for the support. I'm
going to buy some Bayer Advanced Garden granules in the States next time I
go and try it out. I could get into trouble bringing it back across
but it's a chance I'm willing to take. Irises are important to me and
right now, they're not blooming to well.
I have never had any problems with Daylilies
here.
Thanks again,
Chris

Sorry to hear that Chris, those things sound terrible.
I'd hoped your cygon treatments had worked. I had a new spray
recommended to me this year. I've been using Bayer advanced
garden, active ingredients are cyfluthrin (Tempo), and Imidacloprid
(Merit). It's supposed to be absorbed by the plant and act as a
neurotoxin to insects that feed on the flower or plant. This might
work for your grubs. I've been using this spray on
lilies and daylilies to fight thrips and leaf hoppers (they spread virus
in lilies). We had an infestation of pine sawfly larvae, that after
they ate all the needles off our giant white pine, decided to drop and
feast upon anything they landed on. It worked really fast on
them. Have you contacted other growers in Canada to see if
they are having similar problems? I hate to see you having such problems
with growing iris. I think you have some great ideas with your
hybridizing. I wish you the best of luck. Will W.

Will,
I have not done a good job of killing the borers,
they're worse than ever this year. At this point, I can no longer
make many crosses because almost every unopened spathe contains a little
while larva with two tiny black spots for eyes. They destroy the
styles and pollen in a best case scenario, in a worst case scenario, they
make the entire bud rot before it has a chance to open.
My Cycon
treatments were either not effective or not timely for this particular
borer. Question is, what the heck am I going to do about them. I'm
pretty down about it.
Chris
