Thanks Randy and Chris for your comments. Apologies for the double posting on
iris-photos and here but I wanted to offer the following comments/observations
regarding this seedling as well: No space age appendages to be seen though
this was its maiden bloom. Seven more siblings should bloom next year
from this cross and I will be anxious to see the results. When the flower
opened I was just in awe at the pattern and rim on the falls. The
seedling took three years to bloom from seed (typical for this climate in my experience)
but from one healthy plant that I moved to its current location last summer, it
produced 11 increases. Many of the siblings possess this same sort of
vigor. The foliage is very thick and lush too. I also have two seedlings
from the reciprocal cross of Conjuration X Let’s Boogie that should bloom
next year too. Another downside to this seedling is that
I wasn’t able to use any pollen from it or set a single pod on it this
spring. The flowers are massive and some didn’t even produce
pollen. I have mild suspicions of a ploidy issue considering the vigor,
foliar robustness, and massive flowers. I am rowing it out this summer to
evaluate it further and maybe pray for a miraculous improvement in
substance! However, substance is (IMHO) a minor fault if the rest of the
plant’s features still exceed expectations. On the ballot for
garden evaluation I think substance is only worth 5 points but I’d have
to check to be sure. I am concerned with substance since I live in a
windy climate hence my reservations. High Chapparal (Pres. Cup winner at
convention this year) had questionable substance, I thought, yet still won the
honor. Again though, if everything else is up to par once small fault
cannot detract from the “points” (speaking figuratively) it accrues
from its redeeming qualities. Thanks again for the feedback and excuse
my rambling. Btw, I found the dog seedling I spoke of a few days
ago. I will post this afternoon. Horticulturally, Kelly D. Norris Master Gardener Contributing
