RE: More BS (beard spines, of course) and horns

Heat can also cause pollinating failure.  Here in Southern Arizona we had a very hot March, temperature in the upper 90s for a couple of weeks.  Some of the irises blooming then proved fertile though not as many a normal.  Those that bloomed in mid-April had no pollen at all, even some that had been reliable parents in other years.  Somehow the anthers that were still down in the stalk must have cooked during that hot spell.  The late ones which are blooming now seem to have pollen again.  Of course, now it’s too hot for anything to take.  If the high temperature is above 90 degrees F. nothing will set.

I have the same problems with getting opportunities to cross.  For the last week, every other day it decides to rain….and no not a hard rain just enough to make things miserable!

I can’t even count the number of crosses I want to make let alone those I have had to forgo because of rain and wind damaging and ruining blooms and pollen.
