Re: Premature pod browning

Here's an Idea. Botanically, What your describing (pod abortion) to my
knowledge could only be saved by Embryo rescue. That's saying they
have embryo's first of all. I don't know how common this is with iris, but
I have helped in doing it with inter-specific Lilium crosses. It's
definately not the easiest thing to do, and contamination is the biggest
factor. If you want more info. email me privately. I would be interested
if anyone has info of embryo rescue in iris, after doing it with the lilies, I
can't help but look at the iris an go Hmmmmm, what if... :) Will Warner

My cross of Patricia Claire X Special Feature produced a (small) pod,
but after just a few weeks it's already turned brown and started to
shrivel up. Figuring it was a goner, I pulled it off and opened one
end to see what had happened. There are a bunch of immature seeds
inside. Is there anything I can do? Should I let the pod sit and
see if they mature any more? Plant them? Give up? I'm bummed -
I thought that would have made an interesting cross...

As far as SAGE-specific crosses go, I crossed Doctor No with a
whole bunch of stuff, but didn't get a lot of takes. That was the
only "official" SAGE cultivar that bloomed for me this year.
My records are all at home, so I can't remember the pollen parents
offhand, but I have a big fat pod on Doctor No, a nice purple pod on
Innocent Star, and pods on Cin Cin and Genetic Artist. We'll see
what comes of them :-)
