Re: BSE Terminology

Even though, as Donald points out, BSE refers to Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (I've seen that also as "Encephalopathy") what we are using the acronymn for is "Beard Spine Extension."

Bearded (Eupogon only)  irises vary in the structure and thickness of the tissue line from which the beard "baseball bat"-formed multicellular hairs rise.  Some cv's have a thick, elevated line which in wire-guage terms varies up to about 14-guage.  Here this year PARISH FASHION had about a 16-guage Beard Spine (BS--not the Bovine temporary distal extension type).  FOGBOUND had considerably less.

Then, there are cv's that have this line extend beyond the beard hairs onto the fall.  It is highly visible both in AMETHYST FLAME and SWINGTOWN, many generations separated, but of similar character, type and color, and of similar ancestry.  'Swingtown' just happens to be down the ancestral path away from the species by quite a few more generations.  We're going to use Michael's description of "Beard Spine Extension," or "BSE" for short.

Sharon McAllister and Don Spoon have each separately noted to our group that these are characteristics to watch for if one desires a high number of SA's in the progeny, so it may be assumed the BS and BSE characteristics are part of the genetic sequence that includes the SA expressions and will be counted in the results of the evaluated crosses as minimal proto-SA's.

As Michael suggests the reverse is also true--the characteristics are to be avoided if one wishes to escape the SA adventure entirely.

Patrick, I will try to find one of the later summaries of the SAGE project and send it to you or refer you to the date, as there seems to be problems on the Internet with e-mail right now.  I suppose the flood of SPAM is responsible.  I'm getting about a hundred spammer messages a day, quite a few of which appear to contain recognizable viruses, so report my Norton programs screening the messages as they are downloaded.  This is about twice the volume of mail that was coming in a week ago.

The SAGE project sets forth four cross types in the hope these will lead to some usable data about the nature of SA inheritance.  Specific cvs are suggested for 2005, and a number of us are trying to acquire some or many of those included.  It is not expected that all will make all the possible crosses, but that enough of us will so that we will have a substantial number of blooming seedlings to establish high enough numbers to have statistical validity.

That number required is not as large as one might think, but the controls, lack of takes, failure of pollen, etc., will limit our possible successes severely.

I need a few days to find the posts unless I happen to have them in some of the .rtf files I have stored.  I'm still in the recovery phase from my numerous medical adventures over the past two and a half-plus years and am having a problem right now that limits my computer time, so please be patient with me.
