The question about whether TRUE SPIRIT has BS, BSE or what is the sort of
thing we hope to have addressed with a photo index and a framework for
naming or classifying what you see in the seedlings from SAGE crosses.
We need to generate photos that will show in closeup the kind of tissue
developments falling into each classification. So far we have terms like BS
and short horn, long horn, spoon, and so on, with a lot of variations
showing up in SA's varying from the basic type. As we evolve with the SAGE
project, some development of our vocabulary already appears be necessary,
and will be grounded in photographic images that identify each term, each
classification.
Data built up from observations compared against such an index will allow us
to build a useful database of information about what we see in seedlings. A
solid, unambiguous database is the first step toward a genetic analysis.
Clearly TRUE SPIRIT is one of those with enough development of a beard
spine, and a hint of extension, that it would undoubtedly be useful in SA
crosses. This is the sort of thing we need to look for in one of the SAGE
design crosses now in publication (April BAIS: "Getting Serious About Space
Age Genetics," p. 22).
The various kinds of SA phenomena seem to involve tissues from the beard,
tissues from the fall, and even sometimes tissues related more to the
character and patterning of the standards. Why? We don't know, but our
hope in this project is to come up with a useful system of classification
and counts of seedling progenies.
Such information collected is the only way we will be able to develop some
solid ideas about how SA development is generated and controlled.
If any of the participants in this on-line robin have close-up digital photo
capability and want to help by contributing sharp, detailed, digital images
of publishable quality, those would be very welcome. At this point, Michael
M. is hard at work with his camera (and his curiosity) in laying a
foundation for the index.
The kinds of questions raised by the TRUE SPIRIT inquiry and the photos
attached is exactly what we are looking for.
