I think Sharon's observation suggests a neither/both situation. Variegated
foliage and broken color in the blooms have both appeared in the TB X AB
seedlings where neither parent exhibited the traits. I believe it's a
result of the chromosomes not being homologous that results in the
appearance. I do not believe it would be a trait that would transmit into
the next generation, rather simply a result of a bad fit. Sort of like
corns arising from ill-fitting shoes. The variegated foliage plants have a
low survival rate, but of the two that I've managed to get to bloom size,
both had broken color blooms. There are, as it turns out, other means of
having variegated foliage than simple maternal inheritance. Walter Pickett
gave some details once about it concerning other plant genera. The scenario
he gave was a reasonable explanation for the result. It would also fit well
with the broken color showing up in the blooms. That would make the
phenomenon somewhat different than the broken color pattern showing up in
TBs and different from the variegated foliage exhibited by the two
variegated I. pallida plants.
The effect has not shown up in seedlings from TB X TB or AB X AB where the
chromosome sets are either tetraploid or balance amphi-diploids. There are
a lot of unsettled growth habits in TB X AB seedlings. If they live long
enough, they tend to settle down (lots of twinning or even more multiple
divisions of the rhizome, change in plant appearance - e.g. going from
appearing to be a full-sized TB to a plant with slender, curved leaves).
The broken color blooms and variegated foliage are something they don't
outgrow.
On the other hand, those seedlings from TIGER HONEY X AB all had broken
color on the falls to some extent. Not on the standards, though.
