Many, if not most, ferns are protected in New York State. This could be
true in other states as well. Good idea to have a list of what is protected
or endangered in your state if you plan any foraging in the wild.
Large grocery stores or specialty shops can order fiddleheads, or stock them
when they are in season. I think they come canned, too.
