When transplanting tomatoes, peppers (and eggplants), I usually add 1 cup
kelp meal and 1 cup bone meal to the hole before transplanting. The plants
are usually pretty healthy all season long.  I'm also going to try (this
year) 1 cup cottonseed meal.

That doesn't really help you right now, but for future reference.
