Interesting post. Wouldn't even have thought there would be a garden club
there, or a garden. My wife grew up in Shiprock and Cortez. Her father
worked for Kerr-McGee on the reservation and was pretty familiar with the
Lukachukai area, probably because of the oil wells. We used to make the
trip from Phoenix/Cortez twice each year for her parents to spend the
summers in Colo. and made the trip from Lukachukai to Shiprock through the
pass (nice drive) several times but never had the opportunity to look around
very much. Also been down to Fort Defiance.
You are probably aware that Native Seeds/SEARCH in Tucson furnishes free
seeds to American Indians which I would assume makes up much of your garden
club. If not, you might look into it. I can provide more details.
