I have done your experiment for you already....Last year I had about 50
tomatoe plants and decided to do half one way (deep hole) and the rest
to the side way. I cannot say that I saw much of a difference excpt
that I felt in my heart that the roots were getting more water on the
side plants because I hate to admit it but inone way I am like you.....
I am cheap when it coms to watering. Bt the other reason they might
have had the same results is that i always bury my whole tomatoe
stem...so they either went really deep or really sideways...Does that
answer your question?
