Phillippa:
At least you HAD summer! It is 4-28-99 now here is southern California. I live in a city named Riverside. Our spring here in the desert southwest is usually from the end of January to the end of February (if we are lucky). Then, the rain stops and the grasses and the chaparral dry up and start the process of becoming so dry we are Stage 1 fire alerts by the end of July. The rains, if we are lucky may last until the end of February and then we go into a dry spell until September-November. Our summer heat can at times almost rival that in your central areas, 120deg.F.
Guess what?!!? We are in the strangest weather patterns I have seen in the 22 years I have lived here in California. We are cold, wet, rainy and having thunder and lightening today. Outside temp that should be in the 80's aren't. We had one day of warmth last week and then the rains came back. I actually found ICE on the windows of my car 3 1/2 weeks ago!
According to Rhodale's Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening (1992) page 338, formulate a mixture (or purchase pre-made) insecticidal soap. Spray plants thoroughly over and especially under all leaves every day for 3 days to 2 weeks depending on the extent of the infestation. Sulfur can also be used as well as, possibly, Neem oil although it's effectiveness against spider mites is not thoroughly documented.
It may be too late for you to get this message - I hope it helps you.

Well Gang
I have potted up my chillies and bought them inside for the winter....didnt
look so many in the garden, but when bought inside, there is quite a few
there...so now the fight against red-spider mite begins....I also potted up
some parsely, basil, dill, fennal and majoram, and bought them into my
conservatory. So along with the dozen buckets planted with potates, also in
there,I really have got the outdoos indoors.Just in time too as there is a
very cold southerly front moving up over the country, with snow falling in
the mountains,so will get frosts when it clears.Think the end to our golden
summer has arrived.Phillippa
