Hi All,
We grew Turks Turban gourds last Summer and the shape and colouring are
apparent even when the fruit is pretty small. They have two very differently
coloured hemispheres (which are also of a different size). As I recall, one
part (1/3) was bright orange and the other two thirds had yellow, orange,
green and brown stripes running from the waist to the stem end (or maybe it
was the blossom end!) They are very attractive and unusual (or at least here
in South Africa) and we managed to sell some of them to some folks who have
a home crafts stand at a flea market. They get to about the size of a
football, so David although yours sound like they are the right size, the
colouring and shape don't seem to be right. They sound more like another
type of gourd (of which there seem to be hundreds) or even a pumpkin of some
kind. Did you get the seed from a reputable supplier? We bought ours from
Johnnys Seeds and they were all true to type. Check out their on-line
catalogue for a picture. Here is an ASCII 'picture' of the shape.
