If your rows are already planted,it will help to put news paper down in
the middles, and cover with ,sawdust, straw, hay, etc and it will hold moisture
and help with the washing away, now.Next time before planting, mix straw, sawdust, old
leaves, etc,to your ground,"PLENTY"!!! Make a good barrier on the
lower side, and sorta curl it where water will dump, over rocks,or stones(at
a end, away from the rows),anything to stop the soil loss, and also turn
the rows where they will lose some of the water, without washing over them.I
had the same problem with hard soil, old leaves and sawdust, done the trick. My
sloping soil,I have to use ridges in the field, which I angle to slow water, but
move it to other side to garden, and dump it in wooded side.Hope this helps.JIM
Nesa wrote: Thanks Sheila, the idea did occur to me too and I do have some wood that i could use....but I also need to improve the soil I think.Right now it heats up real fast. I hose down the plot everyday and yet by mid-day it looks is caked and hard. The last weeks have been hot- temp up to the upper 80s or 90 I think. The rain helps cool things though. |
