If you can, mulch your tomatoes with clean straw. The tomatoes will sit on
the straw and not on the ground and also, when tilled in, the straw will
provide extra matter for your soil.
As for late crops (I am in northern New York state) try some of the short
season greens such as mustard, spinach, turnip greens (variety specially
for greens) or some of the oriental vegetables.
