Margaret,

 Most wasps will give you a warning thump before they sting, even the
yellow jackets -- unless you actually disturb the nest that is!  I alway
wear a hat (fair skin and thinning red hair) and I've often been warned
off by a wasp's "shot across the bows" on the crown of the hat.
